Title: Slimy Slithery Snakes (with Scales!)
Medium: Glazed stoneware
The work evolved during a Ceramics beginners short course this September, in which Neukirch finally learned about glazes as well as the basic building technique ‘coiling’ for which one forms snakes to build any hollow shape from the bottom up (which seemed like an apt metaphor for belated learning of the medium that she have been using for some time - previously without really knowing what she was doing.) Rather than smoothing the coils over, the artist left them in most parts visibly separated, allowing for the technique to come to life in ‘ssssssnake’ form. They seem to have a mind of their own, breaking formation and rendering the vessel not fit for purpose. The ‘ssssshiny’ glazes were chosen to bring out their ‘sssslimyness’ and even sport some ‘ssssscales’ in the places they merge. The unruly glossy materials of the anthropomorphised slithering object are mingling the all too often hierarchically divided categories of Design, Fine Art and Crafts.
