Title: U for Vtopia

Thomas More’s book about the idealised island society of Utopia was written and published in 1516. Noticeably the utopian alphabet he describes in the book does not seem to include a letter U. While researching the alphabet for this project I discovered that the printed letter U, as we know it today, did not really exist until the 17th century. Before then U was present in spoken language and handwriting, but in print a V stood in its place. My pixel drawing explores the complicated search for the missing U in utopia.
