This Z is a physical response to the machine-knitted Z that formed Marie’s invitation to participate in this project. The detail that such a machine can produce fascinated me, and wanting to learn more about the construction, I decided to replicate the piece – in other words, I foolishly decided to teach myself how to knit. My aim was to scale up the piece, knitting by hand, in order to look as if under a microscope and try to understand how each stitch was formed. Like pixels, I thought. Like knitting a poster! Typical graphic designer. Several over-ambitiously large and wonky versions later, I’ve learned how to change colours and types of stitch, how to cast on and cast off, and how to work out the amount of wool you’ll need (by running out). Now I have this tactile canvas, and I am none the wiser when it comes to the dark art of stitches and loops, but I have learned a new skill and an appreciation for the craft.
