Title: Waterlogged

Originating from the Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyph, M is for water. The wavy line stiffens; curves turn into sharp zig zags.

This piece was intended to be a set of ceramic tiles representing water reflections; waves, storms, ripples, floods, pools, puddles, tiled lidos, that I’d encountered in the month of August.

In the chemical process of firing, the glaze didn’t react as I’d hoped with the cobalt, the careful brush strokes and patterns dissolved, diluted, disappeared like paint on a soggy piece of paper.

The book logs my intentions for the tiles. There are 6 tiles selected from the failures, both processes reminding me of the paradox of water – it’s ability to make us feel calm, whole, at one with ourselves, and its tremendous power and ability to ruin things.
